Planning With ADHD: What Actually Works

Most productivity advice is written for neurotypical brains. Here’s what the research and our ADHD community actually confirms works β€” and why we built these tools the way we did.

Visual trumps text β€” always

ADHD brains process visual information faster and with less friction than text. Every tool we make uses color-coding, icons, and visual layouts rather than text-heavy lists. Our dashboards are designed to be scannable in 3 seconds or less.

Dopamine is a design choice

ADHD brains are dopamine-deficient in the prefrontal cortex. We build checkboxes, streak trackers, and small wins into our tools deliberately β€” because the anticipation of checking something off is a real neurological reward that helps maintain consistency.

Task initiation is the real problem

The hardest part of any task with ADHD is starting it. Our Task Breakdown Planner is specifically designed to get the first 5-minute micro-action on paper so the activation energy drops enough to actually begin.

Systems need reset buttons

ADHD systems fail not because people give up, but because one bad day derails the whole thing. Our Notion ADHD Dashboard includes a “what was I doing?” reset page β€” a structured re-entry point that makes it easy to come back after a few off days.

A note from us

These products are designed with input from ADHD adults and clinically informed design principles. We don’t call anything a “cure” or “fix” β€” these are tools that reduce friction. Your brain is not the problem. The system was.

Key design principles in every ADHD product

We always include

  • Large, scan-first visual layouts
  • Top 3 priority limits (not top 20)
  • Task initiation prompts
  • Energy and focus check-ins
  • Reset / re-entry mechanisms

We never include

  • Walls of text or tiny fields
  • Overly complex systems that require daily upkeep
  • Perfectionist language (“ideal,” “optimal”)
  • Shame-based tracking (missed days highlighted)
  • Systems that break if you skip one day

FAQ β€” ADHD Tools

Do I need an official ADHD diagnosis to buy these?
Not at all. These tools are useful for anyone who experiences executive function challenges β€” diagnosed ADHD, suspected ADHD, anxiety, autism, or simply someone who finds traditional planners too complex. The design principles that work for ADHD brains (visual, low-text, low cognitive load) work for most people.
Are these tools backed by research?
Our design choices are informed by established ADHD research around executive function, dopaminergic reward, task initiation, and working memory limitations. We are not a clinical product and don’t make diagnostic or treatment claims. These are organizational tools designed with neurodivergent users in mind.
I’ve tried planners before and always abandoned them. Why will this be different?
Honestly, it might not be β€” and that’s okay to acknowledge. The difference in our ADHD tools is that they’re designed to be abandoned and re-started. The “reset” mechanism and low-friction daily format mean that getting back on track after a bad week is genuinely easy. Most planner abandonment happens because re-entry after a break feels overwhelming. We designed around that specifically.
Can the Notion ADHD Dashboard work on a phone?
Yes β€” the Notion app is available on iOS and Android and all of our templates are mobile-optimized with a mobile-first page structure. The Daily Dashboard view is specifically designed to work well on phone screens.
